EXPORTS 6: Miami
In this special episode of Voice of the Sea, we’re checking out samples and analyzing data from the final leg of EXPORTS—the international research project studying carbon flow from the atmosphere to the deep sea, with NASA and the National Science Foundation. The first EXPORTS research expedition took two ships and remote vehicles to the Northern Pacific in 2018. The next expedition coordinated three ships to make similar studies in the Northern Atlantic in 2021. EXPORTS researchers from around the world are now combining at-sea research, satellites, and mathematical modeling to improve understanding of ocean food webs, regional weather patterns, and long-term climate change. We travel to the University of Miami to learn about testing organic particles and how they help reveal the history and fate of ocean food webs.
