CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE

Hawaiʻi Sea Grant faculty and staff, together with partnering faculty and institutions, have developed a new model for Sea Grant that is based fundamentally on enhanced collaboration – the center of excellence model. Sea Grant’s traditional excellence in marine and coastal extension, research and education now brings the capabilities of the university to the people of Hawaiʻi.

The centers build bridges among academics and those who can benefit from their scholarship, and allow researchers to hear firsthand about the most pressing issues directly from the community. Centers also provide for inter-college, -school, and -departmental collaboration, something not encouraged by traditional academic structure.

As we move forward, Hawaiʻi Sea Grant continues to serve the constituents while actively seeking to address the opportunities and challenges coastal communities face.
