Staff Meetings
Opening Protocol / Oli: Welina Mānoa
Location: Kaʻala Farm (aka the Cultural Learning Center at Kaʻala) is located in Waiʻanae Valley. Please see the attached map for directions. *Plugging Kaʻala Farm into your maps application will likely take you to the incorrect location on Farrington Highway. The drive is about 1 hour from central Honolulu without traffic. Traffic can add significant travel time.
There will be a liability form email dot you or you can sign on site, please ensure there is time to do that upon your arrival.
Parking is very limited so it is important that we carpool as much as possible and park in the lower lot. There will be one vehicle by the hale and tent.
What to expect:
-
Dress for warm weather in clothes that you won’t mind getting dirty, muddy, wet, or stained. Bring a change of clean dry clothes and a towel. We will be outside with the morning dedicated to service learning (there will be a variety of activities, including loʻi, for a range of abilities to engage in the work) in the afternoon under a shaded hale or pop up tent.
-
Sunscreen and bug spray are important. Please let us know if you have any mobility issues – accommodations can be made.
-
Bring a water bottle and stay hydrated. It will likely be hot. Additional drinking water will be provided.
-
Wear sneakers or slippers for walking around. Wear tabis (reef shoes) or go barefoot when in the loʻi.
-
Please note that the toilets are located outdoors and are porta-potty style. They are equipped with running water and soap for handwashing
Participant Preparation Guidelines
To ensure a respectful and safe visit, please adhere to the following rules:
-
Do not climb on structures or trees.
-
Stay with your group and do not wander off. Individuals with open wounds, sores, or scratches are not permitted in the loʻi (wetland taro patch)
-
Do not pick leaves, flowers, or fruit without permission.
-
No smoking, alcohol, controlled substances (illegal drugs), gum, or candy are allowed.
