Desiree Joy Malabed is a 2022 Peter J. Rappa Fellow at the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program. She will obtain her Bachelor of Environmental Design and Minor in Philippine Language and Culture in the Spring of 2023 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Growing up on the islands, Desiree has been aware of statewide issues like social injustice, economic inequality, housing, food insecurity, and climate change, and she believes that architecture can serve as a catalyst for creating sustainable and inclusive communities. As an architecture student and a Rappa Fellow, she hopes to contribute to Hawaiʻi's journey to sustainability and building resilience for coastal communities and ecosystems through design.
