HULA GRILL WAIKIKI’S MĀLAMA ʻĀINA SERIES CONTINUES WITH A PRESENTATION ON COASTAL MANAGEMENT, BEACH RESTORATION AND SEA-LEVEL RISE ADAPTATION IN WAIKĪKĪ
HONOLULU (June 20, 2024) – Hula Grill Waikiki will host an educational presentation on sea-level rise and local beach restoration efforts as part of its ongoing Mālama ʻĀina series. On Thursday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., all are invited to the restaurant to learn about the environmental issue and how organizations are working to lessen the impact.
Led by Dolan Eversole, coastal geologist serving as the Waikīkī Beach Special Improvement District Association’s Waikīkī Beach management coordinator through the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program, the presentation will introduce the current impacts of sea-level rise and chronic beach erosion, the ongoing beach maintenance projects, and the planned sea-level rise adaptation and resilience efforts in Waikīkī.
“With the shared understanding of the impacts of sea-level rise and ground water inundation in Waikīkī, it is clear that comprehensive climate adaptation will need to go beyond just higher seawalls and wider beaches,” said Eversole. “Urban Honolulu, including Waikīkī, is developing strategies to accommodate water in the future and developing a realistic community-oriented vision of the future under higher water levels in order to maintain the unique sense of place and ensure Waikīkī is maintained as a vibrant economic center.”
Eversole has extensive experience with coastal processes and management issues through his past work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Storms Program and the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands. Through the presentation and Q&A session, guests will have the opportunity to learn about key beach restoration initiatives and the evolving adaptation planning efforts for Waikīkī.
Hula Grill Waikiki’s Mālama ʻĀina series features monthly presentations about Hawaiʻi’s wildlife, ecosystems and environmental issues with a special focus on the ahupuaʻa of Waikīkī. Speakers provide attendees with a better understanding of our surroundings along with a deeper appreciation for conservation and restoration efforts throughout the islands.
