For this “All Hands Retreat” we will begin our day at Kapapapuhi Point Park with Mālama Puʻuloa cofounder and executive director Sandy Ward. Mālama Puʻuloa is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working in Oʻahu to restore Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor). They engage their community by hosting workdays, educating local youth through ʻāina based programs, and creating a lei of partnerships to support collaborative goals. Hawaiʻi Sea Grant has a connection to Puʻuloa through our research programming which included a Sea Grant-funded study focusing on contaminants in coastal sediments and marine organisms, led by Sea Grant Graduate Research Fellow Honour Booth with mentorship from Drs. Eileen Nalley, Megan Donahue, and Kim Falinski. In addition, Sea Grant has an active NASA Environmental Justice study focusing on mapping historic land use in Puʻuloa to develop risk assessments for coastal communities, particularly in the context of food security and restoration of loko iʻa. After lunch, we will caravan to UH Mānoa to learn from the 2021 E. Gordon Grau Coastal and Marine Resource Management Fellows: Anita Tsang, Aka Beebe, and Kiloaulani Kaʻawa Gonzales as they complete their fellowship experience. Presentations will be given in MSB 100 between 2:00 to 4:00 pm HST. Pau hana will follow with pupus and refreshments in the courtyard.
