Maui County Environmentally Sensitive Areas Atlas
Overview
The Maui County Environmentally Sensitive Areas Atlas has been designed as three companion products: the Permitting Tool, the Guidelines for Planning and Permitting in Environmentally Sensitive Areas of Maui County, and a Case Studies Storymap. These tools are intended to be used in conjunction with one another when:
- filling out a permit application as an applicant or
- reviewing a permit application as a county planner.
These products were created to be used on a desktop. Mobile view is not currently supported at this time.
The Permitting Tool
The Maui County Environmentally Sensitive Areas Permitting Tool is a map viewer created to promote a greater awareness of the locations and types of Maui County’s unique environmental assets so that this information can be consciously integrated into planning and permitting decisions. The Atlas was created as a tool for both permit applicants and planners. A summary report can be generated indicating environmentally sensitive areas relevant to your parcel that can be included in a permit application. (Please read the disclaimer before using.)
Guidelines for Planning and Permitting
This guidance shares recommendations for parcels that intersect with environmentally sensitive areas within Maui County. This includes areas with certain ecosystems present (e.g. wetlands or steams), or areas where environmental conditions pose potential risks to the built environment (e.g. excessive erosion or other geological hazards). The Guidelines offer local context, considerations, and links to additional resources.
Case Studies
The case studies in the Storymap highlight examples of actions taken to avoid, adapt, or mitigate impacts to Maui County’s sensitive areas. The 18 examples, featured from across the 10 topical areas of the Guidelines, were developed prior to the creation of the Atlas, and have been selected for their alignment with the Atlas Guidelines.
