Kylie Sugahara is a 2024 King Tides Community Science Intern at the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program. Some projects that Kylie has worked on as an intern include creating flyers and posts to advertise upcoming events and attending public outreach events to encourage community engagement within the King Tides Project.
Kylie is from Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi, and enjoys diving, looking for shells, and making lei. Kylie’s upbringing as a Native Hawaiian has instilled in her the core values of laulima (cooperation) and mālama ʻāina (caring for the land). These values taught her the important role that communities play in environmental restoration and inspired her to pursue a B.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management with an emphasis on community and cultural resources management. Throughout her educational journey, she has grown a passion for protecting Hawaiʻi’s unique ecosystems and working towards integrating cultural indigenous knowledge into environmental mitigation efforts.
