Derek Ford is a geospatial data analyst for the Pacific Drought Knowledge Exchange (PDKE). In this role, he explores and analyzes climatic and environmental data pertaining to Hawaiʻi and U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands; creates new datasets, like daily rainfall maps for American Samoa; develops informative data products, such as factsheets and portfolios regarding issues like drought, flooding, and water supplies; and provides outreach through conferences, public events, and stakeholder engagements.
Derek previously did conservation fieldwork in Hawaiʻi which allowed him to explore unique areas and gain insight into the varied ecologies across the islands. Through this work, he developed his passion for GIS and remote sensing as powerful tools for supporting environmental stewardship. His long-term goals are focused on local resilience and sustainability gained by science, technology, and public involvement.
