Mailelauhulaliakauanoe Hoe is a 2025 Peter J. Rappa Fellow at the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program. During this summer fellowship, Maile will be designing children’s educational materials with the Hanauma Bay Education Program and other organizations. These activity books and field guides will bridge the modern science and wildlife of the areas with the Indigenous place-based story-telling, or moʻolelo. Moʻolelo are the traditional Hawaiian method of recording history and sharing valuable knowledge of the surrounding world, and Maile is passionate about sharing Hawaiian knowledge, or ʻike, with future generations.
She is currently studying business at Windward Community College and is a freelance artist by trade. Through her personal work, she enjoys exploring various aspects of being Hawaiian through a variety of mediums such as acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings, ink prints, and pen and pencil illustrations.
