SURF Project: Sustainable Limu Harvesting at Heʻeia NERR
Mentors: Fred Reppun, Shimi Rii Heʻeia NERR; Alyssa Veneri, ʻĀnuenue Fisheries, UH Mānoa
Ally is working with a graduate student collecting specimen and data for Hawaiian limu (seaweed) growth experiments that explore the effects of different harvesting methods, as part of broader Heʻeia fishpond restoration efforts. In parallel, she is collecting information from the published literature regarding traditional uses of macroalgae/seaweed across the islands. She will also conduct further limu experiments that she designed for her senior thesis to explore the presence of PFAS (“forever chemicals”) in Pearl Harbor and PFAS uptake by limu.
