Mattie is a Hawaiʻi Sea Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow this summer, working on research using microfossils of foraminifera, geologically and climatologically important invertebrates, to explore the environmental effects of drastic human-caused changes to Pacific atolls (e.g. construction and dredging during WWII). Using fossils in cores taken from Palmyra atoll in 2009, she is creating a species ID guide to enable identification of forams in future Palmyra sampling. Comparisons of presence, abundance, and diversity of foram species may help determine large-scale shifts in marine ecosystem interactions due to human-caused changes.
