Maggie is a Hawaiʻi Sea Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow whose research this summer contributes to ongoing work at NOAA’s Inouye Regional Center. She is helping to gather more information on the life histories of Deep 7 bottomfish by verifying ages using otoliths (calcium carbonate structures in the inner ear) and the fishes’ reproductive status from gonad sampling. The end goal is to establish age and maturity distributions of these fish populations better, to help inform catch size limits and maintain a healthy, sustainable bottomfish fishery.
