About Dunes in Hawai‘i
The Importance of Dunes
Dunes are an important part of a healthy coastal ecosystem. They provide essential habitat for important plant and animal species, and they protect beaches and coastal communities from the impacts of climate change. Dunes provide a sacrificial source of sand that can help to replenish the beach after large waves and storm events, and they help prevent inland flooding by creating a buffer between the ocean and coastal buildings and infrastructure.
