Post-Disaster Reconstruction Guidelines and Protocols for Conservation of Coastal Resources and Protection of Coastal Communities, Maui County, Hawai‘i
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: James Buika | AFFILIATION: County of Maui Department of Planning | PROJECT LOCATION: Maui, Hawai‘i
The main goal of this project is to implement a two-year planning process to develop guidelines and protocols for coastal storm reconstruction that will accommodate conservation of sensitive coastal ecosystems while also streamlining repair and redevelopment needs. Key objectives include raising awareness of the need and opportunity for pre-disaster planning and organizing stakeholder groups to support the planning process, as well as involving in the planning process those underserved coastal communities that will lack the required resources for recovery following a major coastal storm event. A key outcome of this project will be the development of reconstruction guidelines and protocols that will complement and extend existing framework documents for response and recovery and coastal management at the local, state, and Federal levels.
