Ka Pili Kai Winter 2014

In 2014 UH Sea Grant bid a fond aloha to its beloved director of 15 years, Professor E. Gordon Grau, who moved into a part-time position with Sea Grant to focus his time and effort on his endocrinology research and mentoring the next generation of graduate students. While Sea Grant is in good hands under the leadership of its new director, Dr. Darren T. Lerner, Gordon’s inspirational leadership and vision reshaped UH Sea Grant into a program that touches the lives of countless people throughout the state and the region. In addition, his vision extended far past Hawai‘i and, through his years of service as president of the Sea Grant Association, he altered the path of the entire nationwide network to make it more adaptive and relevant to the communities we serve. To us, Gordon is “he ho‘okele wa‘a no ka la ‘ino, (Hawaiian proverb which translates to “a steersman for a stormy day, or a courageous person”) and we will do our best to carry on his long tradition of excellence.
