Ka Pili Kai Summer 2011

The decreasing availability of traditional forms of energy and the increasing emphasis on finding and properly utilizing renewable sources of energy, such as solar, geothermal, wind power, and others, will be one of our greatest challenges of the 21st century. It is not simply a matter of research and development of new technologies, although this is a critical aspect that will bring us closer to addressing this daunting problem. A dramatic shift in thinking and an overall change in the way we think about and use energy in our daily lives is and will continue to be critical as we move toward a more sustainable, energy independent future. This important issue of Ka Pili Kai highlights some of the various ways that UH Sea Grant is tackling this critical challenge. Through collaboration with many individuals and organizations, both inside and outside of the university, and by bringing together experts with varying backgrounds and expertise, we are helping our coastal communities develop and implement novel and successful solutions.
