In my capacity as a Sea Grant trainee I collect and analyze economic data to identify long-term economic effects of coastal disasters. In particular, I collect historical economic data (e.g., the number of firms, employment, wages, agricultural exports, tourism, etc.) for the Hawaiian Islands in the period surrounding the 1960 tsunami that struck Hilo Bay. Using a recently developed technique, the synthetic control methodology, I construct counterfactual series for Hawaii County to be used in subsequent comparative case study analysis in order to assess the impact of the tsunami.
