Installation of coastal high frequency radar arrays to monitor ocean currents and improve community storm preparedness: Hilo Bay, Hawai‘i Island
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Jason Adolf | AFFILIATION: UH Hilo | PROJECT LOCATION: Hilo, Hawai‘i
Within this project, high frequency Doppler radios will be installed and used to monitor coastal surface currents in Hilo Bay and Hilo Harbor. The data will be used to support coastal storm preparedness efforts in Hilo, with a special focus on collaborating with search and rescue organizations to integrate real-time Hilo Bay current information into local operations. Additionally, the project will develop related educational activities for the marine science curriculum at UH Hilo, and through a partnership with Mokupāpapa Discovery Center, will raise public awareness of the importance of ocean observing systems to coastal maritime activities.
