2017 University of Hawaii Student Employee of the Year Award Recipient
For over thirty years the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa has recognized outstanding student employees through its Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Program. This award program has special meaning for Hawai‘i Sea Grant as Myrtle Ching-Rappa, the wife of the late Peter Rappa who worked at Sea Grant for over 30 years, established the program in 1986. It has been held continuously ever since.
On April 11, 2017, Tyler Lum, a Hawai‘i Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program (HBEP) student employee, was the overall winner of both UH Manoa’s SEOTY award and also the State of Hawai‘i! He now has the chance to win the West Coast Regional SEOTY award, and then compete for the top national award.
Tyler skillfully combined the experience and knowledge gained through the UH Mānoa marine biology program with effective education and outreach targeting the nearly 800,000 annual visitors to the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Working with HBEP staff and volunteers, he now serves on the volunteer training team which manages approximately 120 volunteer docents. Tyler has a genuine enthusiasm for the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and is an exemplary undergraduate who goes above and beyond the duties and responsibilities of his student position.
