Chantal Chung

Extension Assistant

Chung’s current projects include oversight of the ReefTalk and ReefWatch programs, which provide lectures on scientific research and issues of relevance to marine life and coastal resources, and engage volunteers to monitor and report data on the populations of various fish and invertebrates at selected reefs, respectively. Chung also assists in facilitating a multicultural marine conservation exchange with the Federated States of Micronesia. Through targeted outreach and education, the effort supports information exchange between Pacific Islander communities to help resolve conflicts in usage of marine resources that stem from cultural differences between the local and Micronesian populations in Hawai‘i. A large part of this project involves identifying and implementing effective ways of communicating Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) regulations to Micronesian fishers.

Another key part of Chung’s outreach and education activities includes conducting lessons at West Hawai‘i public schools, through which students are exposed to various applications of science in areas ranging from marine organism anatomy and evolution through climate change. The lessons strive to teach children to integrate manao lana, or non-concrete, general knowledge they have not yet applied, with manao ‘io, the practical, experiential knowledge they have acquired through application of concepts learned in their lessons.
